Samoan Traditional Tattooing

Males with the Soigaimiti/Pe’a have a Chief title known as (Matai). The tatau ritual (tattoo) is a painful process if done the traditional way. The Masters (tufuga ta tatau) tap away using a handmade tool from a pig’s tooth or pieces of bone, turtle shell and wood. The solo (assistant) wipes the excess blood and black ink away this ritual can take as little as three days to years to complete. Those who are covered in the Pe’a (flying fox) have earned respect. This sacred tatoo the Pe’a tells a story of the Samoan history and pride of the culture with designs of symbols of maritime and new growth. Like shark’s teeth, which mean shelter, guidance, adaptability, and power or Spear Heads that mean courage and fight. The tattooing starts at the back and ends at the belly button. Once completed the Pe’a covers the body from the waist to the knees.

Samoan Umu

Traditional above ground oven cooking, this method of preparing roasted foods has been used for centuries and is still practiced daily in Samoa. Almost every Samoan household has an umu in their backyard. The umu is outside under a covered roof separate from the house with enough space for the smoke to escape. At the base of the umu it is lit to heat the rocks in order to cook the food.  Alternating pieces of wood and coconut husks are piled with the smaller rocks at the bottom and larger rocks on the top.  Food is wrapped in banana or breadfruit leaves to protect the food from burning and to keep it moist, which is the most traditional way to cook food. Now days aluminium foil is an easy option to use.
